Privacy Policy

Drill Sergeant guards the apps you choose, makes you earn your scroll with verified push-ups or honest reports, and lets your squad hold you to it. This policy explains what the app and website collect, what stays on your device, what your squad can see, and how you stay in control.

Who We Are

  • This policy covers Drill Sergeant, the discipline app on Google Play and the App Store (both xyz.drillsgt.app), and this website at drillsergeantapp.com.
  • Drill Sergeant is operated from the United Kingdom and is the data controller for the information described here.

Information The App Collects

  • Details you provide: your name or handle, your daily push-up order, your wake-up time, and which apps you choose to put under guard.
  • Your progress: rank, points, streaks, medals, and the number of camera-verified push-ups you complete.
  • Your checkpoint record: how often a guarded app was intercepted, each time you stood down, each report of productive minutes you entered (for example "studied 90 minutes"), and the scroll time you earned.
  • Notification preferences and the status of the phone permissions the app needs.
  • Without an account, all of this stays on your device. With an account, the parts described below are stored on our servers so they survive a phone switch and can be shared with your squad.

Your Account

  • You sign in with Google (Android) or Apple (iPhone). We receive your email address and an account identifier; we never see your password. With Sign in with Apple you can hide your email: we then receive a private relay address from Apple, and our emails reach you through it.
  • Your profile stores your handle, email address, time zone, email preference, points, and your recruit code.
  • Each camera-verified push-up set you complete is recorded with its rep count and time, so your weekly score is computed on our server and cannot be edited by the app.

What Your Squad And The Leaderboards See

  • Global leaderboard: your handle, rank and this week's verified push-up total are visible to other signed-in users.
  • Your squad (people who joined with your recruit code, or whose code you used) can see your squad log: when you stood down, reported productive minutes and the scroll time it earned, completed push-up sets, and recruits you brought in.
  • Squad log entries record what you chose at the checkpoint, never which app it was (entries from app versions before 2.0 may name it). Nothing else about your app use is shared: not what you did inside any app, not your screen, not how long you actually used it.
  • Your email address is never shown to other users.

Recruit Codes And Referrals

  • Every account has a recruit code. When someone joins with your code, we store that link. When they start their free trial, you receive 30 free days; to grant them, we tell our subscription provider (RevenueCat) your account ID.
  • If you arrive through a recruit link on Android, Google Play passes the code to the app when it is first installed, so you don't have to type it. On iPhone you type the code in the app, or open the link with the app installed.

The Checkpoint (Accessibility Service)

  • Drill Sergeant uses the Android Accessibility Service for one purpose: to notice when an app you chose to guard comes to the front of the screen, so Captain Jack's checkpoint can appear first.
  • It only receives the name of the app that opened. It does not read screen text, messages or any in-app content, does not type or tap on your behalf, and does not collect passwords or payment details.
  • Which guarded app opened is handled on your device. Only the outcome you choose at the checkpoint (stand down, report in, or push-ups), together with that app's name, is added to your squad log when you are signed in.
  • The checkpoint is switched on only after you read an in-app explanation and agree to it. You can switch it off any time in Android Settings > Accessibility; the rest of the app keeps working.

App Blocking On iPhone (Screen Time)

  • On iPhone, app blocking uses Apple's Screen Time. You pick the apps in Apple's own list; Apple gives the app only anonymous tokens for them, so neither we nor the app learn which apps you picked or what you do in them.
  • iOS shows Captain Jack's block screen over those apps until you earn time. You can turn it off any time in Settings > Screen Time.

Captain Jack's AI

  • If you allow it in the app, the goals you set, your daily orders and the text of your work reports are sent to our server and to our AI provider, Anthropic (Claude), so Captain Jack can cut your daily orders, write his line with them, and review your work reports.
  • Anthropic processes this only as our service provider and does not train its models on it. We keep your goals and orders (the evening email reports on them); the text of a work report is discarded after the review, and only the verdict is kept.
  • Without your permission nothing is sent to the AI: you write your own orders, and reports count as you entered them. Every AI-written text in the app can be flagged to us.

Your Voice

  • You can tell Captain Jack your goals, today's objectives or a work report out loud. When you tap the microphone, the app records your voice until you tap it again. Nothing is recorded at any other time, and the app asks for permission to use the microphone first.
  • The recording is sent to our server, transcribed by our speech provider, ElevenLabs, and the words are tidied up by Anthropic (Claude) into the goal, objectives or report you meant. We do not store the recording; only the resulting text is kept, exactly as if you had typed it.
  • You can always type instead of speaking.

Camera And Push-Up Verification

  • The camera is used only during a push-up session that you start.
  • Push-up detection runs entirely on your device. Camera images are processed on the phone to count repetitions and are never uploaded, stored, or sent to us or anyone else.
  • Only the resulting rep count is saved, and, if you are signed in, sent to our server for your score.

Emails

  • If you agree to emails, we send a welcome email and periodic reports about your progress. Every email has an unsubscribe link.

Usage Statistics

  • The app records how it is used, so we can see what works and fix what does not: which screens you open, which steps of signing up you reach, and actions such as finishing push-ups, setting your orders or starting a trial. Once you sign in, these events are linked to your account ID.
  • They never include what you type (your goals, orders or reports), which apps you open or block, or recordings of your screen. We do not use them for advertising.
  • We use PostHog (United States) for this. You can switch it off at any time in the app: Settings > Privacy and help > Share usage stats.

Subscriptions And Payments

  • Drill Sergeant Pro is an optional auto-renewing subscription sold through Google Play or the App Store.
  • Payment is processed by Google or Apple. We never see or receive your card or bank details. The app receives only whether your subscription is active.
  • You can manage or cancel it any time in the Google Play Store under Subscriptions, or on iPhone in Settings > Apple Account > Subscriptions.

How We Use Information

  • To run the checkpoint, the daily push-up order, ranks, streaks, medals, reminders and push-up verification.
  • To run squads, recruit codes, referral rewards and leaderboards.
  • To send the emails you agreed to, and to keep the service reliable and free of abuse (for example, rejecting implausible push-up sets).

Service Providers We Share With

  • We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.
  • We use a small number of providers to run the service: Supabase (account sign-in and database), Vercel (hosting of this website and our backend), Resend (sending email), PostHog (usage statistics), ElevenLabs (transcribing what you say when you use the microphone), Anthropic (Captain Jack's AI), RevenueCat (managing subscriptions, free trials and referral rewards; it receives your account ID and your purchase records from Google Play or the App Store, never your card details), Google and Apple (sign-in, app distribution and payment).
  • These providers process data only to perform their function for us. Some are located in the United States, so data may be transferred internationally under appropriate safeguards.
  • We may disclose information if required by law, or to protect users and the integrity of the service.

Older App Versions

  • Versions of the app before 2.0 also generated Captain Jack's voice through ElevenLabs. Since 2.0 his voice is pre-recorded and built into the app; your own voice is only recorded when you tap the microphone (see Your Voice).

Data Retention And Your Controls

  • On-device data stays until you reset the app or uninstall it.
  • Account data is kept while your account exists. Deleting your account removes your profile, push-up history, squad links and squad log entries.
  • To delete your account and all associated data, tap "Delete account" in the app under Settings, see drillsergeantapp.com/delete-account, or email info@drillsergeantapp.com. To leave a squad, email us and we will remove the link.
  • You can turn off notifications, emails, or the checkpoint at any time, and change which apps are guarded in the app.

Your Rights

  • If you are in the UK or EU, you have rights under UK GDPR / GDPR, including the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data, and to object to or restrict certain processing.
  • To exercise any of these rights, contact info@drillsergeantapp.com. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

Children

  • Drill Sergeant is intended for adults and is not directed to children.
  • We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided data, contact info@drillsergeantapp.com and we will remove it.

Website And Waitlist

  • If you submit your email address on this website, we use it only to send launch and product updates. You can unsubscribe at any time.
  • Recruit links (drillsergeantapp.com/r/CODE) record an anonymous page view and forward you to the app store with the code attached.

Changes To This Policy

  • We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected here with a new effective date.
