The Best Instagram Blockers for iPhone, Android and Desktop (2026)

By Fred Smith, maker of Drill Sergeant / Updated / 9 min read

The short answer

Block the whole app, free: your phone's own App Limits (iPhone) or app timer (Android). Block it harder: ScreenZen (free), AppBlock or Opal. Keep your DMs, lose Reels and Explore: SocialLite or ScrollGuard. On a computer: LeechBlock NG blocks instagram.com; Antigram or IGPlus hide only the feeds. Make every visit cost effort: Drill Sergeant. And know this: Instagram's own daily limit is only a reminder.

“Instagram blocker” can mean three different things, and the right tool depends on which one you want: no Instagram at all for a while, Instagram without the bottomless feeds, or no Instagram on your laptop while you work. This guide covers all three, from the free settings already on your phone to the apps and browser extensions built for it, with ratings and prices checked on 2 November 2026. We make Drill Sergeant, one of the options.

30 min
a day across Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat: the cap that cut loneliness and depression in a 3-week experiment[18]
−57%
Instagram and other target apps opened, after six weeks with a short pause in front of them[17]
1 hour
Instagram's default daily limit for Teen Accounts; for adults the limit is only a reminder[1]

First, the free way: settings you already have

iPhone: Screen Time App Limits

SettingsScreen TimeApp LimitsAdd Limit

Pick Instagram, choose how long you get each day, and customise the days if you want different limits on weekends. When the time is up, Instagram shows a time-limit screen instead of your feed[2]. The catch: “Ignore Limit” is one tap away, unless someone else sets the Screen Time passcode.

Android: Digital Wellbeing app timers

SettingsDigital WellbeingApp timers

Tap the timer next to Instagram and set your daily time. When it runs out, Instagram closes and its icon dims until midnight[3]. To stop yourself deleting the timer, turn on the App limits PIN in the same menu. On a Samsung, see the Samsung version of these settings.

Instagram itself: a reminder, not a block

ProfileMenuTime managementDaily limit

Instagram's daily limit tells you when you've reached the time you chose. For adults, that's all it does. Teen Accounts start with a 1-hour limit, and a parent supervising the account can choose to block Instagram once it's reached[1].

Keep Instagram, lose the feeds: SocialLite, ScrollGuard, one sec

If you need Instagram for messages, events or work, blocking the whole app is a blunt fix. These remove the parts built to keep you scrolling and leave the rest. SocialLite strips out short-video feeds, Explore, suggested posts, live streams and ads, and keeps your DMs and the profiles you visit on purpose; if a friend sends you a Reel, you can watch that one, but you can't scroll to the next[7]. ScrollGuard hides Reels, Stories and Explore, and on Android its Strict Mode puts your settings behind a password you can hand to a friend[9]. one sec can remove just Reels on Android[5].

On iPhone there's a catch. Apple doesn't let any app change what happens inside another app, so no iPhone tool can delete Reels from the Instagram app. SocialLite and ScrollGuard work by giving you Instagram's website without the feeds: SocialLite in its own browser, ScrollGuard through a Safari extension[6][8]. It works best if you also block the Instagram app itself. Step by step for both phones: how to block Instagram Reels.

Block the whole app, properly: ScreenZen, AppBlock, Opal

ScreenZen is the best free option: a pause before Instagram opens, a cap on how many times a day you can open it, and strict blocks for set hours, all paid for by tips[10]. AppBlock blocks on schedules by time, place or Wi-Fi, and its Strict Mode stops you changing your mind mid-block[12]. Opal is the most polished and the most expensive, with Deep Focus sessions you can't end early[11]. If the problem is that you always find a way round, a physical key like Brick changes the game; see our Brick review and our ScreenZen review.

On a computer: LeechBlock NG, BlockSite, Antigram, IGPlus

LeechBlock NG is free, used by 100,000 people and rated 4.9; it blocks instagram.com during the hours you choose or after a daily allowance[13]. BlockSite, with a million users, does the same with a simpler setup[14]. To keep Instagram on your laptop for messages but lose the feeds, IGPlus and Antigram hide Reels and Explore[16][15]. Antigram's last update was in May 2025, and Instagram changes its website often, so IGPlus, updated this month, is the safer bet.

Make every visit cost effort: Drill Sergeant

Hard blocks fail when you're the one holding the key. Drill Sergeant takes a different route: Instagram stays locked until you earn it. Ten push-ups, counted by your phone's camera, buy ten minutes; a report of an hour's real work buys time too. Captain Jack turns your goals into daily objectives and keeps you to them[19]. You can still use Instagram. You just stop opening it on autopilot. More in apps that make you do push-ups first.

Pick one. Turn it on before you close this page.

What actually works, according to the research

  • A small cap beats willpower. Students who limited Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat to 10 minutes each a day, about 30 minutes in total, for three weeks reported less loneliness and depression than a control group[18].
  • A pause beats a wall. In a six-week field study of 280 people, a short pause before social apps made people close them again 36% of the time, and cut how often they opened them by 57%[17].
  • Make it hard to undo. Every tool here can be switched off by the person it's protecting. Give the passcode to a friend, use a strict mode, or make unlocking cost something. More in is there an app blocker you can't turn off?

How we compared them

We read each tool's App Store, Google Play or Chrome Web Store listing on 2 November 2026 for ratings, prices and features, and Apple's, Google's and Instagram's own help pages for the built-in settings. Menu names can differ slightly by phone and app version. We didn't rank by affiliate deals; there aren't any. Questions people ask

How do I block Instagram on my phone for free?

Use the settings already on your phone. On iPhone: Settings, Screen Time, App Limits, Add Limit, then pick Instagram. On Android: Settings, Digital Wellbeing, App timers, then set a timer next to Instagram. When the time runs out the app is blocked until the next day. Both can be undone in a few taps unless someone else holds the passcode or PIN.

Can I block Instagram Reels but keep my messages?

Yes. SocialLite and ScrollGuard remove Reels, Explore and suggested posts and leave your DMs. On Android, one sec can also remove just Reels. On iPhone, Apple doesn't let any app change what happens inside Instagram, so these tools work by giving you a cleaner version of Instagram's website instead of the app.

Does Instagram's daily limit block the app?

No, not for adults. Instagram's daily limit is a reminder that tells you when you've reached the time you chose. Teen Accounts start with a 1-hour daily limit, and a parent who supervises the account can choose to block Instagram once the limit is reached.

How do I block Instagram on my computer?

Install a browser extension. LeechBlock NG is free and blocks instagram.com on a schedule or after a time limit. BlockSite does the same with password protection in its Premium plan. To keep Instagram but hide Reels and Explore, use Antigram or IGPlus.

What is the best free Instagram blocker?

On a phone, ScreenZen: it's free, paid for by tips, rated 4.9 from about 53,000 App Store ratings, and adds a pause and a daily limit before Instagram opens. On a computer, LeechBlock NG, which is free and rated 4.9 in the Chrome Web Store.

Can I block Instagram at certain times of day?

Yes. On iPhone, Screen Time's Downtime and App Limits work on a schedule. On Android, Digital Wellbeing's Focus mode can pause Instagram on a schedule. Apps like AppBlock, Opal and ScreenZen add stricter schedules that are harder to switch off.
